BRUNSWICK, CHARLES WILLIAM, DUKE OF

BRUNSWICK, CHARLES WILLIAM, DUKE OF
Prussian general, commanded the Prussian and Austrian forces levied to put down the French Revolution; emitted a violent, blustering manifesto, but a Revolutionary army under Dumouriez and Kellermann met him at Valmy, and compelled him to retreat in 1792; was beaten by Davout at Auerstädt, and mortally wounded (1735-1806).
